Case Study — Online Giving
InterVarsity’s online giving platform connects a donor-facing Drupal experience with payment processing, authentication, integrations, and Salesforce.
IT Sanctuary worked across the full system — from the experience donors use to give, to the APIs and data flows that make sure every gift reaches the right systems behind the scenes.
Drupal · Salesforce · MuleSoft · APIs · Payments · Authentication
The giving experience starts with a simple goal: help donors find what they want to support and complete their gift with as little friction as possible.
The Drupal application supports fund and designation search, one-time and recurring gifts, suggested and custom donation amounts, and flexible giving options. The experience was designed to handle the complexity of a large organization without exposing that complexity to the donor.
Payment options can include credit and debit cards, ACH, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and Venmo, while guest giving allows donors to complete a gift without first creating an account.
Returning Donors
Authentication connects giving with the donor’s account experience, allowing returning donors to access personal information, giving history, saved payment methods, receipts, and recurring gifts while keeping the public checkout accessible to new donors.
The platform was built to support more than a single donation flow. InterVarsity uses online giving across a wide range of fundraising needs — from individual staff and local chapters to campus ministries, specific funds, and organization-wide initiatives.
IT Sanctuary helped build a giving experience flexible enough to support these different campaigns without creating a separate system for each one. Donors can find the person, ministry, chapter, or fund they want to support and complete their gift through the same consistent giving experience.
This flexibility has allowed InterVarsity to run fundraising campaigns across many parts of the organization and process substantial giving through a single connected platform.
The same giving architecture can support highly targeted campaigns as well as large organization-wide initiatives.
Support individual staff and their ministry work.
Give directly to local campus ministries and chapters.
Support specific programs, initiatives, and areas of ministry.
Run broader fundraising efforts through the same giving infrastructure.
We don’t force a project to fit a preferred technology stack. We choose the tools that best match each part of the problem and connect them into one coherent system.
In InterVarsity’s giving platform, Drupal provides the flexible donor experience, MuleSoft manages integrations between systems, and Salesforce serves as the reliable home for donor and fundraising data. Each platform does what it does best while the donor experiences one connected giving journey.
Drupal gives us the flexibility to build complex giving workflows without making them complicated for donors. It supports custom forms, fund and designation search, recurring giving, authentication, integrations, and organization-specific business rules while keeping the public experience clear and easy to use.
MuleSoft provides a central integration layer for the APIs connecting the giving platform with the organization’s other systems. Instead of embedding every integration directly into the website, data mapping, routing, and system-to-system communication can be managed through a dedicated integration layer.
Salesforce brings donor, gift, designation, recurring giving, and fundraising information together in one place. It gives internal teams a consistent view of the data they need while the donor-facing experience and integration layer remain free to evolve independently.
The result is a system that is easier to evolve: the donor experience can change without rebuilding the CRM, integrations can change without rewriting the website, and organizational data remains consistent across the platform.
Whether you need to modernize an existing giving platform or connect your website with the systems behind it, IT Sanctuary can help design and build the complete experience.
